SK Telecom and Intel are joining hands to secure Software Defined Network (SDN) and Network Function Virtualization (NFV) technologies that are important for 5G.
They decided to work together to solve a problem of reduced speed that occurs when network is virtualized.
Intel Korea announced ‘Industrial Cooperation with Intel Solution to Establish Infrastructure for Next Communication’ on the 3rd at KOEX Intercontinental Hotel in Samsung-dong, Seoul. Intel Korea will share technologies related to 5G with domestic and foreign telecommunication businesses such as SK Telecom, Verizon, China Mobile and others and introduced current situation of R&D.
“If 5G is commercialized, all of communication equipment will become information technology (IT).” said SK Telecom’s Advanced Institute of Technology Manager Ju Seok Won who presented on a topic of ‘Cooperation with Intel Regarding Commercialization of 5G’. “We are going to service network that is necessary per industry such as communication, media and others by categorizing it.” This means that network situation will take place where differentiation of current IT equipment and communication equipment will be ambiguous and it corresponds to level of service.
SK Telecom is predicting that network needs to be virtualized or software (SW) needs to be implemented if 5G environment is to be formed. It is saying that Software Defined Data Center (SDDC) that has been a recent topic will become a necessary infrastructure for 5G.
“All of IT excluding hardware (HW) will be opened, and we are going to implement necessary functions with Application Programing Interface (API).” said Manager Ju.
There is a problem with decreased speed when network is virtualized or is controlled by SW.
Industries are predicting that it will not be easy to provide service since speed can fall down to 10%. SK Telecom and Intel are going to work together to find a method to improve speed of virtual network, and Intel’s Data Plane Development Kit (DPDK) is a prime example. SK Telecom confirmed that after testing network’s speed by using Intel’s DPDK, speed increased about 2 to 8 times according to operation system (OS).
Since 3 months ago, SK Telecom is currently testing network with Intel’s Switching Chip Set and it will also discuss with Intel about a method of using Intel’s as a server.
“This year’s biggest topic will be about network being switched to Cloud method through SDN and NFV.” said Executive Director Kim Doo Soo of Intel Korea. “Intel’s technologies will be keys to connect 5G and Cloud Network.”
